Meditation

Your Mind Is Noisy. But Who Is Listening?

“I’ve tried meditation, Phaedra. I can’t do it. I close my eyes and suddenly I’m thinking about my job, the bills, what happened yesterday. I can’t get my mind to shut up!”

Ahhh. Is that so?

Who told you meditation was about shutting your mind off? Meditation doesn’t begin in perfect silence. It begins the moment you realize you can observe a thought without becoming it. When you notice your mind has wandered, you haven’t failed. You’ve become aware.

The Child at the Grand Piano

Imagine a two-year-old at a grand piano. Never taught to play, the child pounds the keys, and when the music won’t come, the tantrum begins.

That child is like the parts of us that never learned another way to respond: the fear, the anger, the old protective habits playing the same tune for decades. Different relationships, different circumstances, same familiar music.

Most of us try to silence that child. But what if you knelt beside them instead and said, “Oh, sweetheart. What’s happening? Tell me”? When the feelings are finally witnessed with compassion, the child no longer has to fight to be heard, and can begin learning a new way to play. And the one who teaches them is you.

Why Practice With a Teacher?

I practiced on my own for fifteen years. Then, after the death of my son, grief brought me to my knees, and I realized I needed teachers of my own. What I learned in the years that followed changed my understanding of myself.

The mind is persuasive. It can use our own intelligence to defend the very patterns we want to change. A compassionate guide doesn’t think for you. They sit beside you, teach practical skills, and help you see what you can’t yet see.

How Long Does It Take?

You may feel moments of calm from your very first practice. Deeper change comes with consistency, often quietly. You pause before reacting. You choose compassion over criticism. One day you notice that something which once consumed you has lost its grip.

Your awakening doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It may be dramatic, or it may simply be the day you’re no longer afraid to be alone with yourself. Don’t underestimate the sacredness of those moments.

Come As You Are

You don’t need a quiet mind to begin. Bring your restless thoughts, your questions, and your beautiful, complicated humanity. Whatever your understanding of the sacred, there is room for it here.

Everything else in life comes and goes. You remain. Why not become someone you can trust to meet yourself with patience, courage, and love?

The only way out is in.
